How Much Soil Do You Need for a 4x8 Raised Bed?
A quick way to estimate soil volume before filling a common backyard raised bed size.
Use the volume formula
Multiply length by width by depth to estimate cubic feet. A 4x8 bed that is 12 inches deep needs about 32 cubic feet before settling.
Account for settling
Fresh soil and compost settle after watering and rain. It is normal to top off a new bed after the first stretch of use.
Do not fill with plain dirt
Raised beds work best with a balanced mix that drains well, holds moisture, and supports roots. Compost is part of that equation.
